The Peanut Diaries: Entry #1

DisclosureOk, so I have been meeting moms on Peanut.  For those who aren’t familiar with Peanut, it is an app to find like-minded mamas.  You set up a profile, and you will get access to profiles of other moms near you.  You swipe up on their profile if you want to connect and you swipe down if you don’t think you would be a good match.  If both moms swipe up, you get a notification that you’ve matched.  You then get the opportunity to message each other to plan to meet up.  If you want to learn more about Peanut, click HERE!

Some meetups have been fantastic, some less than stellar.  I have decided to begin the “Peanut Diaries.”  Each week I am going to go on a mom-date who I meet through Peanut, and I will share with you how our date went.  I have no idea where this will go.  Will it be great?  Who knows.  Will I mom-date a bunch of regular ladies and not come away with a single exciting story?  Maybe.  Will I have crazy stories about the moms I am meeting?  Maybe.  So, here is the first entry of the Peanut Diaries.  Enjoy!

The Peanut Diaries: Entry #1

Who:

Mom who I met at a Peanut event.  Her name here will be “Event Mom.”

What:

Coffee Without Kids

Where:

Local Italian Coffee Shop

When:

Evening

Details of the Date:

I sat down in one of the last remaining open seats at a Peanut event.  The gal next to me (Event Mom) tapped me on the shoulder and introduced herself.  She was also a mom from Peanut who had come to listen to the speakers.  We chatted briefly before the session started.  As the event began, we clinked our glasses of champagne together.

After the session, Event Mom and I chatted a little more.  She asked if I wanted to get coffee.  I was thinking heck yes, of course, I will have a coffee mom-date because:

1) Chulengo is with a sitter and Husband will get home soon to relieve the sitter.  So I am in no rush to get back

2) I haven’t had an evening out by myself in a realllllllllly long time, so I might as well take advantage of it

3) I am still working on expanding my social circle so I should take advantage of each opportunity to meet new mamas

So, Event Mom and I found a local coffee shop.  For those of you who know me, you know I don’t drink coffee.  To me, it tastes like the smell of cigarette smoke.  Yuck!  So I always get super awkward when people say “meet up for coffee” or “coffee dates.”  I always want to give an enthusiastic yes, but then I get distracted by the word coffee and start to worry about what I am going to order.  Even then I know full well I will be ordering a Chai Tea without hesitation!

Anyway, we sat down and chatted.   And we chatted.  And we chatted more.  Before I knew it, 2 hours had passed.  I thought, “This woman belongs in my tribe.”  We had similar philosophies on raising children – sh*t is going to happen, be natural, be kind, have a sense of humor.

It was so lovely to chat with someone who had a child the same age as Chulengo.  We both had followed the same method of introducing food to our little ones.  We also had similar beliefs in decisions for little ones, things we liked to do in our free time, and meals we wanted to cook.  Both of us were transplants to the area and bonded over being the new one in town.

This was my first peanut date since we moved to our new city.  To meet someone who had similar ideas as I do was refreshing.  Don’t get me wrong; I love to meet people who have different views.  That’s how I learn about new stuff.  But, getting to bounce ideas off someone who was feeding their little one like Chulengo was so wonderful!  And to hear similar stories of success or struggle was reassuring.

Overall, we had a great time.  We laughed a lot!  We even exchanged numbers.  Event Mom lives about an hour away from me.  But thankfully I head that way about once a month for an appointment, so I look forward to our future play dates.
