How Your Body Talks: Subtle Signs of Health Issues You Shouldn’t Ignore

Our bodies are quite incredible organisms, dealing with all sorts of intricate tasks that we don’t really think about for the most part. They even tell us when something isn’t quite right, giving us signals which, all too often, we dismiss as minor inconveniences rather than possible red flags. In order to help you listen to your body and potentially prevent more serious health issues somewhere down the line, we’re going to look at a few of the messages your body sends.

Persistent fatigue

It’s normal to feel tired on occasion, particularly after a poor night’s sleep or a long day’s work. When fatigue becomes constant, though, and persists even on lighter days, it can be a sign of an underlying issue. This can be attributed to chronic stress or burnout, anemia, or a thyroid issue. If you have persistent issues with fatigue, it is worth speaking to a doctor.

Unexplained skin changes

Your skin is one of the most expressive parts of your body, for good and bad reasons. When it develops issues without an obvious external cause, it may be that your body is telling you something. Dryness, rashes and discoloration can indicate anything from simple dehydration to an autoimmune condition. Be on the lookout for any sudden changes – skin abnormalities may indicate circulatory issues, problems with liver function, or even diabetes.

Tingling in hands or feet

This doesn’t apply if you’ve been sitting or lying with your arms or legs tucked under you, but if you experience persistent numbness in the extremities, that pins-and-needles sensation could be an indication of nerve damage or conditions including diabetes. A skilled foot doctor can assess the potential causes of issues in that area and help you prevent issues from escalating.

Digestive discomfort

We expect some discomfort if we’ve eaten something spicy or overdone it on the carbs, but persistent digestive discomfort can signal more than just a dietary condition. Food intolerances, including to foods you may have considered bland or benign, can cause bloating or indigestion. There may also be something more chronic, including Irritable Bowel Syndrome or the more serious celiac disease. Keep track of when symptoms occur, and if dietary changes don’t help, consider an appointment with a medical professional.

Changes in balance and coordination

If you have found yourself struggling to balance, stumbling often, or experiencing dizziness without a clear external cause, there is a chance that this could be an issue with your inner ear, a neurological condition, or a vitamin deficiency. If issues persist, it is essential that you seek medical evaluation; as often as not, there will be a simple solution, but delays in assessment and treatment could have grave consequences.

It’s easy to respond to one of the little quibbles our bodies throw our way with the assumption that it’s probably nothing. In truth, statistically speaking it is more likely to be largely benign, but you won’t know unless you speak to someone qualified. And then, if it is nothing, you have that knowledge – but if it is more serious, you’re in a position to deal with it in a timely fashion.
