Fun Activities To Do During a Family Camping Trip

When the hectic nature of daily life starts to take its toll, there’s nothing quite like a family camping trip to bring some much-needed peace and togetherness. But for many families, the challenge isn’t getting out into the great outdoors—it’s keeping everyone entertained once they’re there! Here’s a list of fun activities to do that’ll ensure your family camping trip is full of excitement, bonding, and lasting memories.

Explore With Great Outdoor Quests

Why take a normal, boring hike when you can turn it into an adventure with geocaching? This program is like a modern treasure hunt that uses GPS devices to find hidden virtual containers. There’s nothing like the thrill of the hunt to keep your kids engaged on the trail.

Even if you’re not ready for tech-heavy geocaching, a simple scavenger hunt using a list of items found in nature can be thrilling. Have your kids look for certain types of plants, animals, and other items along the trail. Just be sure to warn them about which ones might be dangerous so that they don’t get too close. This type of activity will keep the little ones busy and encourage them to observe nature and appreciate the beauty of the great outdoors.

Make sure to wear clothes and shoes to keep your feet comfortable and your body temperature regulated. I found picking up some new hiking gear for the boys got them very excited about hiking. I ordered a pair of hiking boots and picked up some hand-me-down hiking pants from a neighbor. The new (to them) clothes and shoes made it easy for them to want to participate.

Take the Plunge

Bodies of water are like magnets for families camping in the summer, which means they offer many fun activities for your family to partake in. Whether splashing at the edge of a lake or taking a dip in a natural swimming hole, water activities offer a refreshing break and a great way to bond. Make sure to wear sunscreen and keep a waterproof hat on to shade your face from the sun.

If you want to do more than swim, gather the family and try your luck at fishing, build a makeshift dam, or take a canoe ride down a calm river. We took the boys kayaking, during our last adventure and it was a great way to spend time together and explore. If you want to get more extreme, look into renting a boat on a lake to do some tubing or water skiing. Regardless of what you choose to do, these activities provide fun, a sense of adventure, and ample opportunities to share in the enjoyment of nature’s aquatic wonders.

Master the Culinary Art

What could be more quintessentially ‘camping’ than roasting marshmallows over an open fire? But the culinary adventures of a campfire don’t stop there. Get creative with foil packet dinners, skewers, and cast-iron pan recipes that are easy for the kids to get involved in. If you went fishing earlier, there’s nothing better than getting the opportunity to eat what you freshly caught. Just make sure you teach your children to be careful around the open flames. It never hurts to learn about burn injuries and what to do in a worst-case scenario.

Reach for the Stars

If you live in a fairly populated area, camping presents amazing conditions for stargazing that you can’t get at home. When you’re away from the pollution of city lights, the night sky comes alive with stars, planets, and constellations. We recently snuck away to Joshua Tree National Park, and the stargazing there was top-notch. Even the boys kept “oo’ing and ah’ing” over the stars. Inspire your family with a simple astronomy guidebook. Even consider investing in a telescope if stargazing becomes a beloved family hobby. Encourage the kids to invent their own stories behind the formations they see and make memories that are as endless as the universe you’re gazing into.

When the hectic nature of daily life starts to take its toll, there’s nothing quite like a family camping trip to bring some much-needed peace and togetherness. But for many families, the challenge isn’t getting out into the great outdoors—it’s keeping everyone entertained once they’re there! This blog post lists fun activities that’ll ensure your family camping trip is full of excitement, bonding, and lasting memories.

From turning ordinary hikes into adventurous quests with geocaching or scavenger hunts, to cooling off with water activities like swimming, fishing, or kayaking, there are endless opportunities for outdoor fun. Culinary adventures around the campfire, such as roasting marshmallows or cooking foil packet dinners, add a delicious twist to your trip. And when night falls, stargazing away from city lights offers a magical way to end the day, sparking curiosity and wonder in both kids and adults. Whether you’re exploring nature, splashing in water, or marveling at the night sky, these activities will make your family camping trip unforgettable.
