It’s Renovation Time! What Do You Need To Know?
Renovation time is coming! If you’ve decided that you want to renovate your entire home or certain areas of your home, you need to get started on the process. Different people tend to do different things in different orders, and there really is no right or wrong way. It’s all down to what suits you the best!
In this article though, we’re going to be giving you some advice as to what you should know about renovations and how we recommend you proceed. Setting Your Budget First Will Help
We recommend that before you do anything to do with your renovation, including the planning, you sit down and think about the budget that you have. It’s important to work with money that you have and not money that you think you will have because you never actually know what is coming. There’s nothing worse than starting the process and actually having to stop and wait part way through simply because you planned on having some funds that you don’t actually have.
So, sit down and set your budget so that you can start planning around this. If you’re going to be using savings, we do not think it’s a good idea to use all of them on this project. Ideally, you want to leave some savings for a rainy day, rather than wiping them all out. This is, of course, unless you have a specific savings account for this renovation, in which case feel free to go nuts.
Write Down What You Want
Having a plan is important to the process as it ensures you have a direction to follow. If you don’t have a plan and you don’t have any sense of direction, you may end up making decisions off the cuff. Now, we’re not saying that this is always going to turn out badly or that making snap decisions is always bad, but what if you change your mind in two weeks and the work has already been completed? You are either then stuck with something that you don’t actually like that much because you didn’t sit with it for long enough, or you have to pay out again simply because you moved too fast.
Do you need to create more closet space? What about that cozy electric fireplace? Thinking of changing the layout of the rooms? You will also find that having a plan written down lets you get everything you need when you need it. It keeps things organized and will make your renovation journey much easier.
To DIY Or Not To DIY?
There are certain tasks that you can do yourself, and there are certain tasks that you should not do yourself. We know that there are a lot of people out there who would love to DIY as much of their renovation as possible to save on cost and that is an awesome idea. As long as you have confidence in your skills and you’ve looked up what to do so that you have an idea of how to do it, you can crack on.
Having said that, there are some tasks that are just too complex or even too dangerous to take on yourself. For example, if you have any plumbing or heating issues and you are not a qualified engineer in this area, it’s not worth the risk. You could make things worse without even trying, and then you’re going to have to pay more money for a professional anyway. So, we recommend getting in touch with a heating and plumbing engineer to sort this out for you. The same goes for anything to do with electricity or air conditioning.
Do You Have A Timeline You’re Hoping For?
When you’re planning out your renovation, you need to ask yourself whether there is a timeline that you’re expecting everything to be completed within. For example, if you are adding a modern electric fireplace to your living room to boost ambiance and provide warmth, you need to consider the installation process in your timeline. Is there a date that you ideally would like your renovation completely finished, and is this realistic, given all of the work that you want to do? It’s important to ask yourself this question because if you don’t, you may carry your potentially unrealistic expectations into the project, struggling with stress when it’s not done.
If you are using professionals, consult them about how long you think the project will take. Sometimes you need a range of professionals, especially if you’re doing a complete renovation, and you need to work out timings based on the order of work being completed. The more that you understand about this, the easier it will be for you to enjoy the renovation process.
Extension Or Loft Conversion
You may have decided that there isn’t currently enough space in your home, and if this is true then you should look into an extension or a loft conversion depending on what is best for you and your needs. It also depends on the practicalities of either of these things, as for some people it’s not a possibility no matter what.
To do this, you’re going to need to get a contractor out to look at your home, let you know what is possible, how long it’s going to take, how much it’s going to cost, and how long that area of your home will be out of bounds for. You also have to plan for the fact that it’s going to be a noisy process, so keep that in mind! But, once it’s done we’re sure you will thank yourself for choosing to expand your home and give yourself some more room.
