Tips for Decluttering and Organizing Your Basement

For many of us, the basement is the go-to spot for storing holiday decorations, old furniture, and other miscellaneous items. Although we might not need everything, we hold onto it “just in case.” Over time, these items can pile up, leaving the space cluttered and chaotic. When that happens, it’s time to take action. Use our tips for decluttering and organizing your basement to transform it into a functional and efficient storage area.

Create Cleaning Areas

Start cleaning by dividing the basement into zones. This will allow you to tackle the clutter step by step. Focus on one area at a time and only move to the next once you finish the current one. By breaking the area apart, you make the job feel more manageable.

Sort and Categorize Your Items

When you clean each area, create three distinct piles for the following:

• Keep: Items you still use regularly or value.  
• Donate or Sell: Items you don’t want that are good enough to donate/sell.
• Trash: Items that are damaged or broken or have no practical use.  

If you have a hard time deciding whether to keep or donate/sell an item, ask yourself how often you use it and whether you’d really miss it. Get rid of items you haven’t used in over a year, excluding holiday decor.

Moreover, create separate piles for the items you’ll throw away; this can include general trash, recyclables, and electronic trash.

Get a Roll-Off Dumpster

Cleanout projects accumulate a lot of trash, and trying to place all of it into the regular bin may be out of the question. Most roll-off dumpsters come in several sizes, such as 15-yard, 20-yard, and 30-yard. A 15-yard dumpster is usually ideal for a basement cleanout since this project is typically on the smaller side compared to a full-house cleanout.

As you dispose of trash, ensure you know how to load the dumpster properly to get the most out of your rental. Ideally, you’ll want to load the heaviest and largest items first, followed by smaller and lighter junk.

Invest in Storage Solutions

The next tip for decluttering and organizing your basement is to keep it clean. Invest in storage solutions such as plastic bins, labeled containers, and shelving units. These will help prevent clutter from forming in the future and make it easier to find what you need when you come back to retrieve something.

Additionally, sort items according to type and keep similar belongings together. For example, if you have crafting supplies, put all of them in one bin and place them on a shelf with other art essentials. This way, you know exactly where to look when you need something for a project.

Purge Regularly

Nobody likes doing a big purge since it can take several days and disrupt your routine. Reserve at least two days yearly to review your basement and eliminate clutter. If you have a large household and junk keeps piling up, you may need to declutter more frequently than that.
