Tips for keeping on top of your home maintenance

Whether you own your property or live in rented accommodation, there are always jobs to do around the house. If you live a busy life, or simply find them boring (let’s face it, we all do) it can be hard to tick these jobs off, especially when there are plenty of other things we are sure you would prefer to do. 

Some people hire residential cleaning services to do them for them. This means you can spend your time doing the things you enjoy, but if you don’t currently have the budget to do so, there are a few changes you can make yourself to keep on top of your home maintenance.

Create a home maintenance schedule 

To be consistent in life you should have a schedule. You are likely to have one at work and for many people, they will have one for their home life. In this schedule (or if you don’t have one, create one) include your home maintenance tasks. List them out in weekly tasks, monthly tasks, every six months tasks and yearly tasks and put them in your calendar.

Creating a schedule will help you remember to do them, but when creating one, you will add tasks which you may have not thought of before. Our biggest tip when creating a schedule is to not include all the smallest tasks, as this can make the schedule too overwhelming. 

Tackle small repairs instantly 

If you fall into this category you are not alone. A lot of people will see a small task and then think, I will do this later, leave it and then not get around to doing it for ages. Then another small task crops up and another, until you have loads of small tasks to do, which makes it even harder to do as you don’t want to spend your time off doing all these small tasks. 

A quick change to your habit that will make keeping on top of your home maintenance that little easier is to do that small task instantly. Chances are, the small task will take you five minutes, but when it’s done it’s done. So when that screw falls out, screw it back in next time, instead of leaving it, until the next one falls out and you then realise you have lost the other screw and have to go to the shop to replace it. Plus, small repairs can lead to major repairs if not dealt with, which can be very bad but avoided. 

Set reminders 

Reminders on your phone are so useful. They pop up in the morning when you wake up and tell you the tasks you need to do that day. You can use reminders to list all your home maintenance tasks that need to be done that day. Add a reminder to put your clothes in the washing machine, a reminder to clean the gutters on the weekend and a reminder to clean the windows. By having them pop up in the morning, it helps you to remember them, instead of forgetting and having them all build up. 

Hire professionals when needed 

If you are too busy, the easiest thing to do is turn to the professionals to help. A professional will do an exceptional job and it means you don’t have to do it – it’s a win-win! No matter the home maintenance task at home, there will be a professional who can do it.

To start with, having a residential cleaner come in each week will save you time on the daily tasks and keep your home clean and tidy. You can have a roofer come in to look over any damage to your tiles every couple of months and a window cleaner come around every month or two to go over your windows – if you live in a flat, it can be hard to clean your windows.
